Cervical Caps

A cervical cap is a small, firm latex or silicone cup designed to adhere to the cervix by suction and to hold gel close to the cervix. To the best of our knowledge, the FemCap is the only cervical cap currently being manufactured anywhere in the world.

Indications for use as a contraceptive:

  • Insert cap with spermicide before intercourse
  • It is optional to apply more spermicide before additional acts of intercourse
  • Leave the cap in place for at least eight hours after intercourse
  • Cervical caps are approved to be worn up to 48 hours in the US and up to 72 hours in Europe

FemCap

FemCap, Inc.
The FemCap is a clear, silicone cap with a removal strap over the dome. It has a groove between the brim and the dome that is designed to hold spermicide and trap sperm. The FemCap covers the cervix and part of the vaginal fornices. It comes in three sizes: 22, 26, and 30mm and is available in the United States and Europe.

Oves

Veos, UK Ltd.
The Oves cap is a clear, disposable, silicone cap that comes in three sizes: 26, 28, and 30mm. It has a small loop on the rim for easy removal. To the best of our knowledge this product is no longer being manufactured anywhere.

Dumas

Lamberts (Dalston) Ltd., UK
Also known as the “Dutch cap,” the Dumas is a shallow, bowl-shaped latex cap. It covers the cervix and part of the vaginal tract. The Dumas cap comes in five sizes: 50, 55, 60, 65, and 75mm external diameter. To the best of our knowledge this product is no longer being manufactured anywhere.

Vimule

Lamberts (Dalston) Ltd., UK
The Vimule is bell-shaped with a flanged rim. It covers the cervix and a part of the upper vaginal tract. The Vimule comes in three sizes: 42, 48, and 52mm external diameter. It was subject to a US FDA recall in 1983 due to a high incidence of vaginal lesions. To the best of our knowledge this product is no longer being manufactured anywhere.

Prentif™

Cervical Cap, Ltd.
The Prentif™ cap is a small flexible cup made of latex. It is thimble-shaped and fits tightly over the cervix. The Prentif™ cap comes in four sizes: 22, 25, 28, and 31mm. Cervical Cap, Ltd., the sole distributor of the Prentif cervical cap in the United States, was dissolved in 2005. To the best of our knowledge this product is no longer being manufactured anywhere.
